New Moon Magic

What potential lies in the darkness of the New Moon?

For thousands of years, people have followed and utilized the cycles of the moon. The moon cycles were one of our most reliable time keepers. We planned, planted, and harvested by the moon. With the moon being our closest celestial companion, the waters, plants, animals, and people of the Earth all ebb and flow with the cycles of the moon.

Technically, New Moons are the invisible phase of the moon, and are commonly referred to as a black moon. A new moon is the lunar phase when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, making its illuminated side face away from us, rendering it invisible or nearly invisible from Earth. The new moon rises and sets with the sun and is therefore lost in its glare. It marks the start of a new lunar cycle which is about 29.5 days and, when the alignment is perfect, it causes a solar eclipse.

In astrology, the new moon is a conjunction between the sun and the moon. They’re at the exact same degree in the zodiac. Energetically, new moons are considered the starting point of a new cycle. It’s a time for planting new seeds of intention in a particular sector of your life. The new moon initiates events that will typically begin to show results within 6 months, when there is a full moon in the same sign.

The level to which a moon cycle is expressed within your life - subtle psychological growth vs actual tangible impacts - is dependent on your personal chart. But in my personal experience, I can most commonly track it to my ongoing personal psychological and spiritual growth which then eventually manifests in my outer world.

As mentioned before, the new moon is a conjunction between the sun and the moon, so that means it’s a joining of the energies of these two celestial bodies.Astrologically, the sun is soul energy. It’s the essential life force energy.

The moon is the subconscious, the emotions, and the body. It represents the actual embodiment of the essential life energy provided by the sun. So, a conjunction brings these two aspects of ourselves together, our soul and our earthly self. Therefore, the new moon is a time when we can tap into the soul to plant seeds for our day to day, earthly life.

Each new moon carries these foundational qualities, and each new moon is unique due to the ever-changing placement of all the other interconnected cosmic bodies throughout the sky and the zodiac.

To make the most of any one new moon, it's best to find out which house it's happening in in your personal birth chart, and learn about the influence of the other planets at the time of the new moon. Then use this information to inform your seeds of intention. Create an affirmation around the intentions you set in motion with the new moon, and repeat these a few times daily for the 7 -10 days following the new moon.

Moon Water Ritual

Moon Water: The Moon has a rhythmic relationship with the waters of our planet and our bodies. Water facilitates connection and is the carrier of emotion. Use the moon water ritual to help you embody your intentions and help you make the connections necessary to bring it to fruition.

Fill a clear jar with water and hold it in both hands as you mindfully speak your new moon affirmation or intentions to the water. Place the water outside or near a window where it can receive the moons presence overnight. Drink your moon water with conscious intention of bringing life and connection to the seeds you've planted with the new moon.
